Strikes by two unions covering workers on London’s underground network have caused delays and cancellations for millions of commuters across London.

Emergency measures to keep the system moving are in place, but services have been severely hit by the 48-hour strike which is due to end on Friday.

The RMT and TSSA are angry about plans to cut nearly 1,000 jobs and close manned ticket halls. Transport for London (TfL) says this would save £50 million a year.

Commenting ahead of the strike, Colin Stanbridge, chief executive of London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: "Any tube strike has a huge impact on the London business community and those it employs.”

Not only does it make the daily commute more difficult for millions of workers, but will also impact on the tourists, visitors and shoppers who bring money into the London economy.”

TfL data shows that only three in every 100 journeys on the Tube involve a visit to a ticket office.
