Starting a new job can fill you with all sorts of emotions from excitement to nerves, it can feel daunting and scary but also, this is something that you want, something you interviewed for and something you were successful at getting, it's usually something you've been working towards so, there's a reason you're there.

There's a reason you were chosen for the role but also a reason why you chose that company to work for. When you first get started, it's important to make your mark and to show why you should be there and what you're going to bring to the company, so how can you do that?

Become An Expert on Company Processes

It can be tough to get up to speed when you're the new person, so when you get started, and you have less actual work to do, use this time to learn the systems and to become an expert on the company.

Jozef Opdeweegh, CEO level leader and consultant, says that you need to be out there and allow the associates to get to know you. You should spend time on the shop floor, demonstrating a decent level of understanding of the operational processes, but more importantly, you should interact with your coworkers.

Be Respectful

If you're taking over a new team, or even just joining a new time, remember that this group of people were a team with ideas and they were getting results before you came along. Even if you don't agree with how they have worked in the past and decisions they have made, tread carefully with any criticism as any negativity might not go down to well.

Be Trusting

As you get up to speed with your new role, you won't be able to get directly involved with what's currently going on. During this time, you need to be able to trust that everyone is good at their job, and they know what they're doing.

Come Up With A Game Plan

Sit down with your boss as early as you can and work out some realistic goals and a realistic timeline. This will give you a clear idea of what's expected of you and what to focus on. Then as you begin working toward your goals, you can start giving your boss a regular progress report.

Get To Know Your Colleagues

When you start a new job, seize any opportunity to get to know your colleagues, whether you go for lunch with a couple of people, after-hours drink, or a chat in the kitchen, get to know them and get to know the office culture, the unwritten rules and hierarchy.

Get the conversation rolling and make the conversation about your new colleagues. Ask about their day-to-day work, their families and hobbies as no one can resist an opportunity to talk about themselves. By asking questions, you will come across as someone that is friendly and interested in getting to know them.

Be Flexible And Open-Minded

Don't be afraid to ask questions about anything you don't understand in the company or your job, or even someone else's job. Even if you think your question is stupid, it isn't, there is no such thing. Asking questions shows that you are keen to learn, plus the more you ask, the easier and quicker it will be for you to settle in.

Be open-minded of the way things are done, even if you think there could be a quicker way, don't be critical, just keep your opinion to yourself for now. You can give your suggestions once you've got the hang of things a little bit and earned their respect.

Show That You Care

Show your new colleagues that you care about your work and you care about the company's objectives. In those early days, if you see that your new team is struggling to meet a deadline, then don't just leave when it comes to home time, ask how you can help and get involved.

Double and triple check everything you work on so that you make a really good first impression and show your colleagues that you can be trusted and relied upon.

Be On Your Best Behaviour

When you first start your new job, it's a good idea to arrive early and ready and be well-rested. Stay away from any confrontation and disagreements and make it easy for your new colleagues to accept you. Just because you're on your best behaviour, doesn't mean you can't be yourself, so let people know who you are too.
