What gave you the idea to set up The Clubhouse?
The Clubhouse was born out of my own needs, following years of meeting my clients, contacts and partners for my property business in hotel lobbies and coffee shops in Mayfair.
I didn’t need an office to work from five days per week, but needed a professional, more business-like alternative that filled the gap between an office or serviced office and a hotel or typical members club. I couldn’t find one, so came up with The Clubhouse concept.
How did you go about the task?
I started to brainstorm and looked at all the options out there in the market. I wanted to create a disruptive business model by taking all of the good things I could find and repackaging them in to what The Clubhouse is today - a smarter way of doing business. I spoke to a number of my contacts and organised a team that would help to raise the seed capital we needed and to expand further.
How has the environment for ‘offices away from the office’ and desk space changed since you started?
Continuous advancements in mobile technology and cloud computing has dramatically changed the way we work. People no longer need a fixed London office and are in a position to work from anywhere with a good Wi-Fi connection - and good coffee!
We built on to this by providing a range of value added services and benefits with the intent of making our members and their businesses more successful.
What do customers like about the flexibility offered by services such as yours?
As businesses scale up and expand, no one really knows where they should really have an office, what form it should take, and how large it should be. The Clubhouse is therefore the more flexible, and smarter alternative that can be used by business of all shapes and sizes
What do you think sets The Clubhouse apart from your rivals?
There’s been a huge growth in the number of co-working spaces over recent years. The Clubhouse however is different, as we are more of a professional ‘flexible meeting space’, paying more focus on quality hospitality and the level of service we offer. I believe that no one does what we do, the way we do it.
What are your expansion plans?
We are looking to open a network of Clubhouses across London over the next few years before expanding internationally. In the short term we hope to see a new Clubhouses in St James’s and one in The City within the next six-months.
What do you think are the key ingredients of a great working environment?
Creating a collaborative ecosystem and a productive environment is key. This is where business relationships can develop and grow. It has to be a combination of the right design, location, people, facilities and service.
What has been your biggest challenge in creating The Clubhouse?
Not being able to expand as quickly as we would like to.
Based on your career experiences, what is your best piece of advice (or more than one) for people starting businesses?
Perseverance and tenacity: don’t take no for an answer as there is always a way!
