The next government must keep the economy on track, regardless of which party or parties run it, says the UK’s most influential business group the CBI.

May’s general election is the closest in decades and analysts are split on the likely winner. There is a strong chance of a new coalition, with either Labour or the Conservatives sharing power with one or more minor parties.

But the CBI, which represents the UK’s biggest businesses, says regardless of the government’s make-up it must create a “clear delivery plan for the first 100 days”.

It said keeping the economy moving was a priority, with clear goals to boost investment and create opportunities for everyone.

It published its own ‘business plan’, including a focus on pro-enterprise measures and more steps to shrink the country’s fiscal deficit.

Its first step should be to outline new tax and spending rules and announce a snap comprehensive spending review – or mini-Budget.

CBI director general John Cridland said it was important to minimise post-election uncertainty and make sure important policy decisions are not set back.

“We cannot afford a power vacuum that delays urgent policy decisions and unsettles potential investors, so any new cabinet must get down to business as soon as possible,” he said.

“Much remains to be done to secure the UK’s economic future and business wants to see a confident, new administration getting into its stride by taking action on the key priorities.

“[These include] staying on top of the public finances, meeting the urgent demand for new homes and making progress on EU reform.

“For any incoming government to make its mark it needs clear delivery milestones in its first 100 days. Politicians tend to focus on the next big idea or initiative but business will judge success on the delivery.”

The CBI called for action on hub airports, more free childcare for working parents and a ‘one-in, two-out’ approach to new regulations.
