e-Go Aeroplanes, a UK manufacturer of lightweight carbon fibre aeroplanes, has landed £950,000 in a second round of funding.

The Cambridge-based business had set a target of between £650,000 and £800,000 for the funding round, but interest in the business was greater than expected.

The funding followed e-Go’s first successful flight in October last year.

All existing investors put in new funds, as did a pool of new contributors including the Government-backed Angel CoFund and members of the crowdfunding platform SyndicateRoom.

In all, there are now 80 investors in the business, up from just 20 in the previous funding round which took place in 2011.

e-Go is planning more flight trials and testing and its first customers will receive their planes during the first part of 2015. Each plane costs around £60,000.

“The e-Go ethos is to do a lot with a little and that will remain our guiding principle,” said Malcolm Bird, e-Go’s executive chairman.

“The UK is unique in offering such a supportive deregulated environment for aircraft of this type; so new investors can look forward to an exciting time in helping bring to market a design that is innovative, striking in appearance, fun to fly and will cut dramatically the cost of personal flying.”
