New tool lets users ask complex, multi-part questions and follow-ups as firm aims to reshape how people search online
Google has rolled out its new AI-powered search feature, AI Mode, to users across the UK in what it is calling a “major shift” in how people use the internet.
The feature, billed as Google’s most advanced search experience yet, will allow users to ask more detailed and multi-part questions, as well as follow up in a conversational style. It will begin appearing in the Google Search tab and app from Tuesday, with full availability expected over the coming days.
The launch follows its introduction in the US in May and in India earlier this month. It comes on top of Google’s AI Overview feature, already integrated into standard search results.
Hema Budaraju, Google’s vice president of product management for search, said the new tool would reshape how people search for information. “This is the beginning of a major shift,” she told the PA news agency.
AI Mode uses Google’s latest Gemini 2.5 model to interpret and respond to complex queries, automatically breaking them down into sub-topics to help users get more targeted results. It also supports voice, text and image-based searches.
According to Google, early users have been submitting queries two to three times longer than typical searches, often using the tool to compare products, plan trips or understand detailed topics.
Budaraju said AI Mode should help surface harder-to-find information but acknowledged it was still in development. “We won’t always get it right, but we are committed to continuous improvement,” she said.
When the system lacks confidence in a response, it will instead show standard web search results.
