Pret A Manger has experienced a major sales boost, surpassing £1 billion in 2023, a 20% rise compared to the previous year. The surge is largely driven by Pret’s ambitious international expansion, with new stores opening in markets like India, Spain, Cyprus, and South Africa.
The chain now operates in 18 countries, with 30% of its 690 stores located outside the UK. The company also reported a 10% sales increase to £569 million for the first half of 2024, highlighting its ongoing growth.
The UK-based sandwich chain is quickly establishing itself as a global player, hitting its target to double in size by 2026, three years ahead of schedule. CEO Pano Christou emphasized the success of Pret’s international push, stating that “£1 in every £4 is now spent outside the UK,” signaling strong growth opportunities beyond its British roots.
Pret’s success comes despite challenges, including inflation, industrial action, and a cost-of-living crisis, which have led to necessary price increases. The chain’s recent adjustments to its popular drink subscription model, which sparked backlash from UK consumers, further underscore the competitive pressures it faces.
Pret’s expansion is expected to continue, with plans for 10 new shops on the U.S. East Coast by 2026, and New York designated as its “overseas capital.” The company opened 81 new shops in 2023, over half of which are located outside the UK.
In addition to its retail growth, Pret also announced changes in leadership, with Konrad Meyer stepping in as the new chairman to lead the next phase of the company’s international expansion, further strengthening its global footprint.
