London Mayor Sadiq Khan has revealed plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street, aiming to revitalize one of the world’s most iconic shopping destinations.

Backed by the new government, the proposal seeks to turn Oxford Street into a traffic-free, public space to boost economic activity and restore the street's global retail prominence.

Khan said, “Urgent action is needed to give the nation’s most famous high street a new lease of life.” The initiative will make the area greener, cleaner, and safer, supporting businesses and creating jobs, he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner endorsed the plan, calling Oxford Street a “world-renowned shopping destination” in need of rejuvenation. John Lewis and other major retailers expressed support for the proposal, with significant investments planned to enhance the area’s appeal.

But not everyone is happy.

"The latest pedestrianisation proposal from the Mayor of London was only shared with us last Thursday," said Stuart Love, Chief Executive of Westminster City Council.

"It will be important to receive further details about what is planned, including how long it could take to be delivered and how the concerns of local residents and users of the street will be addressed.

"We will want to know how they will benefit from any proposals, particularly given the practical challenges pedestrianisation may have for the wider area. As a custodian of the West End, our role will be to ensure that local voices are heard loud and clear."

The Mayor’s plan includes establishing a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) to oversee regeneration, with the goal of making Oxford Street a top global retail and leisure hub. The transformation is expected to boost London’s night-time economy, increase footfall, and attract more visitors.

Barbara Stoll from the Clean Cities Campaign highlighted the environmental benefits, stating that pedestrianisation would tackle London’s air quality crisis while benefiting businesses.

The proposed changes aim to help Oxford Street compete with international high streets such as Times Square in New York and Paris’ Champs-Elysees. If approved, this would mark a major step forward in revitalizing a crucial part of London’s retail landscape.
