Figures from accountancy group BDO and the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) also revealed record high recruitment and investment intentions across the sector.
The rosy picture was seen across “all regions and sectors” while the balance between domestic and overseas sales was “healthy”, according to the report authors.
They expect the manufacturing industry to grow by a respectable 2.7 per cent in 2014.
EEF chief economist Lee Hopley said: "This is the most positive set of indicators we have seen for some time, demonstrating that we've not just turned the corner, we're actively heading down the right road.
She added: “Manufacturers are clearly feeling more confident as their order books fill up and exports are strong.”
