A survey by Checkatrade shows optimism remains among tradespeople, but rising costs, taxes and red tape are holding back growth.
Electricians, plumbers, painters, decorators and other tradespeople across the UK are finding it increasingly difficult to grow their businesses as they grapple with rising costs, mounting bureaucracy and hiring challenges, according to new research.
A survey of 850 tradespeople carried out by Checkatrade found that while many in the sector are keen to contribute to the government’s growth agenda, significant barriers are preventing them from doing so.
Four out of five respondents said soaring prices for tools and materials were restricting expansion, with the problem compounded by a surge in tool theft. A similar proportion pointed to higher taxes, including the increase in employer national insurance contributions, as another key obstacle.
Checkatrade’s chief executive, Jambu Palaniappan, said the trade industry plays a critical role in the economy but needs more support if it is to thrive. “The UK is a nation dependent on the trade industry — from carpenters to electricians, decorators to roofers,” he said. “The 900,000 people behind it couldn’t be more important for propelling our economy, and our research shows how eager they are to contribute to the government’s growth agenda. While there is an abundance of optimism and significant opportunities for growth, challenges remain.”
He added that ministers should work with industry to close skills gaps, ensure apprenticeships are designed to benefit smaller firms, and reduce the red tape and taxes that are stifling growth.
The study highlights how many tradespeople, often running small or family-owned businesses, are caught between strong demand for their services and rising pressures on margins. Hiring apprentices and investing in growth remain priorities for many, but these ambitions are increasingly difficult to achieve without greater financial stability and government support.
