Additional Storage Options For Your Vehicle Compared

There are many situations when having some extra vehicle storage can be handy. But just what is the best way to boost your vehicle’s storage space? This post compares a few different storage solutions.

Trailers

Of all the storage solutions on this list, trailers can offer the most additional storage space. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes with each one designed for a different purpose. Flatbed trailers are popular for work purposes - they can be used to carry everything from machinery to construction supplies.

A camper trailer is meanwhile a great option for road trips - these are commonly used to carry tents, camping equipment and extra luggage.

What are the drawbacks of a trailer? The biggest drawback is that they make driving a lot more challenging (which can put off many less confident drivers). They can also be unsafe to use in certain weather conditions. You also can’t tow a trailer unless you install a tow bar - which could be an extra cost to factor in.

Racks

Racks can be installed on the back or the roof of a vehicle. They are often used to carry bicycles, sports equipment and luggage. Unlike towing a trailer, you do not have to adapt your driving as much. This can make racks a popular option.

Racks do have their downsides including having weight restrictions and being potentially noisy. It’s also important to properly secure items to racks with ropes and clips - many people lose items because they don’t secure them properly.

Roof boxes

A roof box is another popular vehicle storage solution. Roof boxes are often used to store extra suitcases and loose items, which can be enclosed and locked away to keep them secure from damage or theft.

Roof boxes also don’t affect driving much aside from adding a little extra weight. They come in various different sizes, which you can compare online.

Because roof boxes add extra height to a vehicle, you do have to be more careful of driving under low trees or barriers. Installing a roof box also typically requires you to have racks on your roof - not all cars have these racks and so you may have to get these fitted first.

Ceiling nets

A ceiling net is attached to the ceiling in the inside of your vehicle. It can be used to carry all kinds of extra items - the size of which depends on how big your car’s ceiling is and how much headroom there is.

Unlike other additional storage options, ceiling nets don’t affect the height or length of your vehicle. They’re also very cheap to buy. This has made them an increasingly popular option.

Of course, you won’t be able to store as much in a ceiling net as you might do in a roof box or a trailer. You also need to make sure that the net is installed securely so that you don’t have items falling on you and your passengers’ heads while driving. Heavy objects like suitcases may be best avoided for this reason.
