BrewDog is set to close 10 of its bars across the UK this week, including its original venue in Aberdeen, in a move expected to affect around 100 jobs.

The closures, which will take effect from 26 July, form part of a broader shake-up of the Scottish brewer’s hospitality business. Staff have been told the company will begin a consultation process lasting at least two weeks.

Among the sites to shut are BrewDog’s flagship Gallowgate bar in Aberdeen, which was the company’s first bar when it opened in 2010. Other affected locations include Brighton, Camden, Shoreditch, Oxford and Sheffield.

Chief executive James Taylor told employees the decision reflects “rising costs, increased regulation, and economic pressures” facing the wider hospitality sector. He said the company had explored options to save the affected venues but could not make them commercially viable.

A BrewDog spokesperson said the move is part of a “more focused strategy” and a “rationalisation” of its bar footprint, adding that the company still plans to expand in other areas. These include launching larger, destination-style venues and opening smaller community bars.

“This decision is not simply a response to the challenging UK hospitality market, but a proactive move to redefine the bar division’s focus for long-term, profitable growth,” the company said.

BrewDog added that it would attempt to redeploy affected staff where possible and provide support to those leaving the business.

The brewing firm, which built its brand on a punk image and rapid expansion, has faced growing scrutiny in recent years over its workplace culture, leadership and commercial direction. While it continues to push into international markets and maintain a strong retail presence, its hospitality arm has felt the strain of post-pandemic trading conditions and stubbornly high costs.

The company’s list of bar closures includes:

  • Aberdeen Gallowgate

  • Brighton

  • Camden, London

  • Dundee

  • Leeds North Street

  • Oxford

  • Sheffield

  • Shepherds Bush, London

  • Shoreditch, London

  • York

The closures mark a significant moment for BrewDog as it repositions its bar business in the face of economic headwinds and changing consumer habits.
