If you have ever used a business's online services, you have probably encountered problems and had to contact a help desk for support. Help desk support agents provide information on a business's products, services and processes for customers, though they usually work for tech companies.

You are probably familiar with and have spoken to help desk support agents before, but have you ever considered entering the health desk support field? It is not a difficult field to enter, being a tier one position, and comes with IT help desk software that allows you to keep orders organized.

The opportunity for advancement is also present as the position is usually used as an entry level stepping stone by those entering the tech field. There are also varying help desk titles, including normal help desk support agents, help desk support analyst and help desk technician.

The work from these positions may vary a little depending on title and company, but in general the jobs entail helping people by providing important information and support. If you are uncertain of the benefits of entering the health desk support field, here is some information on the help desk salary trends of 2020 to help you make an informed decision.

Average U.S. Salary for Help Desk Support Agent

The average salary for help desk support agents has seen a general trend of rising in 2020. As of July 2020, health desk employees had an estimated average yearly salary of $62,823. However, this estimate is for a senior help desk support agent.

Furthermore, factors such as training, education and experience can cause variations in annual pay for a help desk support agent. The average lower end of the scale starts at approximately $55,860, reaching up to $70,960 at the higher end of the pay scale.

The average hourly salary for a senior help desk support analyst agent is $19.11 as of 2020, though it can range from $7.25 per hour on the lower scale to $40.15 per hour at the upper end of the scale.

The values for all help desk agents are a little lower, but not by much. Since 2018, the help desk support agent annual salary has seen an increase of 4.9%. The lowest average annual salary jumped from $38,000 a year in 2018, to $38,250 a year in 2019, and finally to $49,750 a year this year, 2020.

The upper average annual salary value also saw an increase from $63,750 a year in 2018, to $64,500 a year in 2019, to this year's (2020) upper average value of $86,500 a year.

These values take into account not just regular senior positions, but also more technical and demanding help desk positions, causing the variation seen between it and the upper range for a senior help desk position.

Reasoning Behind the Rise in Salary

So why has the average salary for those in the help desk industry gone up? The answer is demand. Most tech companies need help desk support agents, not only to help with product information, but also to internally support employees.

Furthermore, with growing strides and new innovations taking place in the tech industry, the demand for help desk support has gone up, explaining the rising trend of the help desk average salary. Help desk support also falls into the IT field, which generally sees increases in salary as well.

The starting salary for a help desk agent is not on the upper end of the IT scale. However, an increase in knowledge and experience as you climb up the ranks correlates to an increase in salary.

Furthermore, there has been a general increasing trend in average annual salary for help desk support agents, going into 2020, over a two year period. Therefore, it can be predicted the average salary will continue to increase in the future.
