The electric car revolution is gathering pace in the UK as more and more motorists are starting to make the switch.
It is easy to see why as there are many benefits to switching to an electric vehicle, plus this is also being actively encouraged by the Government and this will only continue ahead of the proposed 2035 ban on the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles.
Sales
In 2020, hybrid and plug-in electric vehicles account for over 10% of car registrations in the UK and it has emerged as one of Europe’s largest markets for these vehicles in recent times.
Car sales are declining currently for a number of different reasons, but pure EV’s were the only type to see growth in new car sales in May of 2020 even despite the lockdown.
Registrations for pure EVs are up more than 60% in the first 5 months of 2020 compared to 2019 so it is clear that more and more motorists are making the switch and enjoying the perks of electric driving.
Investment in the Charging Network
The main reason why people have been hesitant to make the switch up to this point is range anxiety and the lack of infrastructure. This is no longer an issue as there has been significant investment into the charging network.
Matt Eland, the Operations Director at Direct Gap provided his insight into the current investment:
“The Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, recently announced the £2 billion investment in the UK's road infrastructure. Part of this is allocated to improve the accessibility of car charging across Britain - in particular ensuring all motorway services have a minimum of 6 rapid charging points. These investments coupled with the Governments plans to ban diesel and petrol cars in the near future will only increase the appeal to the general public.”
These plans that the Government have outlined could revolutionise long-haul electric vehicle usage in this country.
Range of Cars
In addition to the improving charging network, there is now a greater variety of electric vehicles to choose from and the technology is improving so cars can travel further without charge.
Affordability was another big deterrent for motorists despite the running cost savings, but there are now a number of more affordable electric vehicles available which will allow many more people to join the electric car revolution.
Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular in this country which is excellent to see and it is something that every motorist needs to consider, especially when you consider the 2035 ban on the sale of petrol and electric and the number of Clean Air Zones that are appearing up and down the country.
