The construction world is vast and there are several unique roles within the industry. Often, there are multiple workers collaborating on a single construction project.
Each person on a construction site has a specific set of responsibilities and they play a vital role in the completion of a project. If just one area of the project is lacking, it can cause delays, financial loss, and health and safety hazards.
Some construction workers are present from day one of a project, whereas other may be hired at a later stage in the process. Let’s run through some of the major roles in the construction industry and the main duties of each job role within a construction project.
Construction Manager
The construction manager is often called the site manager. They oversee the whole construction project and are usually the ones who make the final decisions about things.
Construction managers must have the necessary qualifications and several years of on-site experience. They will need to ensure that every stage of the project is completed to a high standard and on time.
Another key role of the construction manager is to hire staff, order supplies and materials, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations throughout the project.
In some companies, a construction manager will take on the role of the bid manager. Alternatively, a separate bid management team may be hired to select contractors for a project. A bid management software, such as Procore. is often used to streamline the bidding process.
Laborer
A construction laborer works on-site and performs the manual work in a project. To obtain a role as a laborer, you will need to have completed an apprenticeship or a relevant course at college.
The main tasks of construction laborers include concrete laying, concrete reinforcement, digging holes and trenches, and joining pieces of metal for various structures. It’s an intense job that requires a great level of physical fitness and attention to detail.
Architect
Architects and designers create plans for buildings and other large structures. They need to ensure that the constructions are safe and sturdy but also aesthetically pleasing. Architects work closely with the rest of the construction team to bring your designs to life and advise on resource allocation.
To become an architect, you will need an architecture degree and relevant work experience in a diverse range of construction projects. You will also require a license to legally practice as an architect.
Scaffolder
As a scaffolder, your main roles involve the delivery and unloading of various scaffolding resources to a construction site. You will also be involved in the erection of the scaffolding to secure building materials in place or lay down safe platforms for workers to use during the project.
To become a scaffolder, you will need to complete an apprenticeship or college course. It’s a physically demanding role that requires attention to detail and extensive knowledge of health and safety regulations.
