Whether you’ve been driving for years or it’s your first time, it’s nice to feel safe on the roads. With many car crash horror stories plastered across the media, it’s hard to know whether you should feel safe behind the wheel. Nerves run high for parents watching their children learn how to drive, fearing the worst. However, there are many systems in place that try to prevent the risk of an accident, making the UK a safe place to drive. Here are just some of the reasons why the UK is a safe place to drive.
Car safety measures
Cars have come a long way in a few years. Companies are putting safety measures in place to keep their drivers, passengers and pedestrians secure. Automatic breaks are a popular choice, particularly for more powerful cars. The car will sense when danger is approaching or you’re coming up to standstill traffic too quickly and slam on the breaks, helping to prevent a crash.
A black box is a popular choice, particularly for new drivers. A black box monitors the speed of the driver with the aim to keep them within the speed limit at all times. Using a black box can reduce the cost of car insurance, so it’s worth investing in.
Thorough driving tests
Your driving test and theory exam ensure that all new drivers are up-to-date with the latest rules and regulations. Driving instructors take the time to carefully guide their students through the rules of the road, getting them exam ready. If a student doesn’t pass their test the first time, they’ll have to keep going until they’re deemed safe to get behind the wheel. Also, new tests are now being added, including the use of a sat-nav. This helps young people and first-time drivers use tech safely whilst driving.
Driving conditions
The UK might have some rubbish weather in the wintertime, but we don’t often experience extreme weather conditions. Because of this, it’s a lot easier for people to stay in control behind the wheel, helping to avoid unnecessary accidents. Also, the steady weather conditions don’t affect the roads too much. Heavy rain or intense heat can cause roads to crack, causing potholes and issues on the road. So, with the majority of the UK weather staying at a steady rate, driving in adverse weather is an infrequent occurrence.
The UK isn’t the safest in the world!
The UK is a much safer place than a lot of countries around the globe, but that doesn’t mean that it is the best country to drive in. There are plenty of other countries who have incredibly safe driving roads with Norway and Japan having some of the safest roads in the world. In Norway, around 3 in every 100,000 people die in accidents with Japan only slightly higher than that around 4. So whilst the UK isn’t in the top five countries, it is still considered one of the best countries to drive in.
