Millions of London Underground (LU) commuters have been given hope of avoiding travel misery after one of two striking unions cancelled a two-day action due to start this evening.

The TSSA union said it had reached a deal with LU authorities over the closure of manned ticket halls.

At time of writing the union had tweeted that the RMT union had also called off the strike, but the RMT was yet to confirm its position.

A TSSA spokesman said: "We have now agreed a process where all our serious concerns over safety and job losses will be seriously addressed through the normal channels.

"We are obviously pleased that we have agreed this process, which will allow us to suspend our strike immediately, and cancel it later when the agreement reaches us in a formal document."
