One of the UK’s largest suppliers of mobility and independent living equipment has sold off part of its business after collapsing into insolvency earlier this month.

Mobilitas Group, the owner of mobility retailer CareCo, has acquired the product sales arm of NRS Healthcare — also known as Nottingham Rehab — in a deal that will safeguard access to more than 13,000 products ranging from walking aids and wheelchairs to complex assistive technologies. A specialist team of staff will also transfer to the new owner.

The move comes after a court-appointed liquidator began winding up NRS earlier in August, when efforts to secure a buyer for the whole business fell through. The Leicestershire-based company had already begun shifting its service contracts to other providers, following years of supplying equipment such as hoists and hospital beds to the NHS and local councils across England and Northern Ireland.

The Department of Health and Social Care said earlier this month that it was monitoring the situation closely in order to “minimise any potential disruption” to patients and care providers.

William Harrison, co-founder of Mobilitas, said the group was determined to preserve the company’s legacy. “We didn’t want to see a company with such rich British heritage simply disappear,” he said. “We’re proud to step in and ensure their customers continue to receive excellent service while unlocking new growth opportunities for the business.”

NRS Healthcare had been a prominent name in the sector for decades, helping older and disabled people remain independent at home. Its collapse highlights the financial strain on UK healthcare suppliers as they grapple with tight margins, rising costs and an over-stretched care system.
