Many people across the country are working from home, which brings a whole host of pros and cons. While some may be struggling to balance home-schooling and working, others may be enjoying a break from their typical commute.

As well as bringing to light new opportunities and challenges, this remote working arrangement highlights the positives and negatives of our typical work routines.

Of course, most workers will be missing their office and colleagues, but there are certain irritating aspects of working life that we may not be so sad to see the back of. But what exactly will workers miss the least about the office?

Online printing company instantprint recently undertook a survey of 1000 people to discover the most annoying office habits. Here’s what they found out…

5 most annoying office habits

  1. Poor personal hygiene
  2. Colleagues tucking into smelly food in the workplace
  3. People taking frequent smoking breaks
  4. Those that continually whistle
  5. Co-workers arriving late

In top spot as the most annoying office habit is poor personal hygiene, closely followed by eating smelly food in the office. This shows that workers are most irritated by things that get their nose twitching while trying to concentrate, so perhaps you should think twice about bringing in left over fish pie once you’re back in the office…

Following this, respondents stated that those taking advantage of regular smoking breaks and continually whistling wound them up, as well as colleagues showing up late to the office or meetings.

5 over-used phrases we hate to hear

  1. “Regards” as a passive aggressive email sign-off
  2. “It’s on my radar”
  3. “Ducks in a row”
  4. “Move the goalposts”
  5. "Hit the ground running”

When it comes to lingo, there are a whole host of phrases that get thrown around regularly in the workplace. You’ve probably lost count of the times someone’s asked to “pick you brains” or “borrow you for a sec”. While many phrases we accept as simply polite office lingo, there are other’s that are so over-used that they are guaranteed to wind us up.

Instantprint’s survey found that workers find “regards” as an email sign-off the most irritating phrase of all, followed by “it’s on my radar” and people stating they’re keeping their “ducks in a row”.

With a third of workers stating that these annoying issues negatively impacted their productivity, perhaps we should all consider how to reduce these gripes going forward.

There are loads of positive steps we can make, from reducing the amount of irritating workplace lingo we throw around in emails to organising team building exercises that will improve our colleague relationships. Not only will these changes make people happier in the workplace, but will also improve productivity, leading to increased business success.
