London music start-up ROLI has announced £7.6 million series A funding in a round led by Balderton Capital, investors in LoveFilm and Kobalt Music Group.
The business will use the money to beef up its leadership and product engineering teams, as well as increase production to reduce customer waiting times.
ROLI’s main product is the Seaboard GRAND, a keyboard that enables music to be created in new ways. It has been labelled the “piano of the future” in the press and demand for the product has created waiting lists for up to a year.
Other investors include FirstMark Capital, investors in Pinterest and Shopify; Index Ventures, investors in Sonos and SoundCloud; as well as strategic investor Universal Music.
ROLI founder and CEO, Roland Lamb, said, “This capital will enable us to scale production capacity to meet growing demand, build our team, and accelerate our product roadmap.
“The Seaboard is just the first in a line of breakthrough music hardware and software products, and the investment will speed development of core platform products like our sound engine Equator.”
Mr Lamb invented the Seaboard in 2009 while studying at the Royal College of Art. The business received angel funding in 2012 and has grown from two people to 33 in just two years.
