Also today the Chinese PC maker unveiled a $2.9 billion deal to buy Google’s Motorola handset arm, in a deal comprising $660 million in cash and nearly 620 million shares.

Google, famed for its regular high-value investments in technology firms and products, lost a bundle on Motorola Mobility, which it acquired in 2012 for $12.5 billion.

The original deal was to secure hundreds of patents filed by Motorola techies.

This year has started red-hot for deals; just last week Lenovo signed on the dotted line for IBM’s budget server business, parting with $2.3 billion.
