How Remote Companies Can Start Creating Team Bonding

When you think of remote companies, what immediately comes to mind? For a lot of people, it’s video chatting and being on platforms like Slack and Zoom for hours at a time, right? Well, needless to say, working remotely offers unparalleled flexibility and freedom, but it can sometimes feel isolating.

There are ups and downs, but isolation tends to be the biggest one. Without the traditional office environment, remote companies face the unique challenge of fostering team cohesion and camaraderie among employees scattered across different locations.

Honestly, it’s not necessarily a bad thing, either. Technically, if you think about it, people in traditional offices could also not get along, so whether physical or not, it doesn’t always have to make a difference. But what matters is creating those bonds. But for remote companies, what’s the best way for them to go about it? Well, here are some effective strategies to bring your remote team closer together.

Online Virtual Workshops

One of the best ways to bring your team together is through online virtual workshops. For the most part, these can be tailored to the interests and needs of your team, ranging from professional development sessions to fun, skill-building activities. But technically, they don;t have to be boring and work related. Actually, you’re better off not pushing anything that’s work related, most people don’t want to waste their time on that.

Instead, maybe choose workshops that can be fun such as virtual cocktail making classes, or even something more artsy.

The goal is fun. If you wanted to host one or get another team member to host, that could be fine too, but there’s loads of companies out there that let you sign up with groups of participants. So, just by learning and growing together, team members can connect on a deeper level, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

Virtual Bingo and Other Games

Who says work can't be fun? Well, it depends on what it is, of course! Actually, introducing virtual games like bingo can be a great way to break the ice and inject some light-hearted competition into your team's routine.

There are companies that offer and even host these game nights, but bingo isn’t the only option either. Some other game options include trivia nights, online escape rooms, and even multiplayer video games. These activities provide a much-needed break from work, allowing team members to relax and enjoy each other's company.

Virtual Happy Hour

Some find this awkward, others find it fine, just don’t push this one. With that in mind, just because you can't meet up at the local pub doesn't mean you can't enjoy a drink together. Virtual happy hours are a fantastic way to wind down after a busy week and catch up with colleagues in a more casual setting. So, if you wanted, you could set a regular time each week for your team to gather online with their favourite beverages.

Don't Force Bonding – Let It Come Naturally

While it's important to provide opportunities for team bonding, it's equally important not to force it. Everyone hates being forced to do work-related things outside their work hours, so you need to keep that in mind. Plus, authentic relationships develop over time and under the right circumstances.

Again, you can have a traditional office, and you’d still see a lack of bonding; distance has nothing to do with it. It’s just best to create a supportive and inclusive environment where team members feel comfortable being themselves.
