The number of people switching bank accounts has jumped 14 per cent in the last six months, owing to rule changes making the process smoother.

The new rules were introduced in October and allow customers to change banks in seven days with all payments and charges automatically transferred.

Figures from the payments council show this has convinced many to switch. The changes were part of a drive to reduce the perceived dominance of the ‘big four’ high street banks.
